These offices were typically located in areas with either free routine delivery service or in larger communities with populations of 4,000 or more.

Originating in 1885, the Special Delivery service quickly gained popularity. Initially, it operated from 7 a.m. to midnight, catering to the urgent needs of postal customers. By the following year, the service hours were adjusted to run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. due to its overwhelming demand.

Such was the success of the Special Delivery service that by 1886, it became a standard offering across all U.S. post offices, ensuring prompt delivery for those willing to pay a little extra for the convenience.
