Reason for Issue: These commemorative stamps were issued to celebrate National Stamp Collecting Month, held annually in October. The 1992 theme, "Do Something Wild – Collect Stamps!", aimed to promote philately and encourage people to explore the world of stamp collecting.

Design and Significance: Connecticut artist Robert Giusti was commissioned to create the captivating images featured on these stamps. Each animal was carefully selected for its distinctive coloring and represented various regions of the world. The stamp designs showcase a diverse range of wildlife, including a giraffe, giant panda, flamingo, king penguins, and a White Bengal tiger.

Special Design Details: An interesting anecdote accompanies these stamps: the initial design labeled the penguins as Emperor Penguins, but it was later corrected to accurately depict King Penguins. This correction was made before printing began, ensuring the accuracy of the stamp imagery.

First Day Ceremony: The First Day of Issue ceremony took place at the Odenheimer Sea Lion Pool at the Audubon Zoological Garden in New Orleans. While originally intended to be exclusively sold in New Orleans on October 1st, due to miscommunication, post offices nationwide inadvertently sold them that day. Additionally, some stamps were sold even before the official First Day, with the earliest known postmark dated September 2nd.
